Draw Poker Play:

Draw poker is a basic poker variation most players learn before any other games. Although there are many variations of draw poker, all of them follow the same principle: All cards are dealt face-down and players can discard some of their cards replacing them by new ones from the deck.

Five Card Draw

A classic variation of draw poker is five card draw. The game starts from dealing five cards to each player, which is followed by a betting round. After the betting round, players change some of the cards. The maximum number of cards each player can change must be defined before the game starts. Normally, players can change up to all their five cards, unless there are not enough cards in the deck. With 6 players, for example, it is advisable to set 4 cards limit to avoid emptying the deck before the end of the game.

When all players change their cards, another betting round takes place and players compare their hands. The player with the highest hand at the table wins the pot.

Draw poker is normally played with a fixed betting limit, with two values: one for the first betting round, and another one for the second betting round. The bet size for the second betting round is usually twice bigger than the first one, so the limit maybe called by the first limit only. For example, a game called 1-2 dollar draw poker is played with 1 dollar bets in the first betting round and 2 dollar bets in the second one. The same game may be called simply 1 dollar draw poker, meaning that the second round bet is twice bigger (2 dollars).

There are many variations of draw poker. Draw poker games can be played with different number of cards, involve community cards, Guts declare or any other stipulation applicable to poker games. One of the most popular draw poker variations, often used in video poker machines, is Jacks or Better. This game is completely equal to draw poker, but only hands that contain a pair of jacks or a higher combination are valid. When played as video poker, Jacks or Better machine simply does not pay anything if you do not have a valid hand. If Jacks or Better is played at a real table, a pair of jacks is used as an opener. Only a player who has a pair of Jacks can open a betting round. If nobody at the table has a valid hand, cards are re-dealt and players re-ante into the pot.

Another popular way to vary draw poker is to add a joker into the deck. Joker can be used as a completely wild card, but more often it is only played as an ace or as a card that completes a straight or a flush. If the player has got neither straight nor flush in his final hand, Joker is considered as an ace. In any case, the players must be warned if there's a joker in the deck and informed about the exact rules regarding it.
