Do you want to learn more about poker in general and different poker games?
A poker game is a card game where a poker deck is used and the winner is determined according to poker hands ranking.
Poker Deck
A standard poker deck consists of 52 cards of four suits. The suites are Hearts, Diamonds, Spares and Clubs. The cards are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. A poker deck can also contain up to four jokers. A Spanish deck that consists of 36 cards with 1 to 5 removed, can also be used with some poker games.
Poker Hands Ranking
Here is a standard poker hands ranking from lowest to highest:
- High Card: a hand that does not contain any other poker combination and is valued by the highest card.
- Pair: a hand that contains two cards of the same rank.
- Two Pair: a hand that consists of two pairs of matching cards.
- Three of a Kind: a hand with three cards of the same rank.
- Straight: a hand with five consequent cards.
- Flush: five cards of the same suit.
- Full House: a hand that contains Three of a Kind and Pair.
- Four of a Kind: four cards of the same rank.
- Straight Flush: a hand that is Straight and Flush at the same time, viz. five consequent cards of the same suit.
- Royal Flush: a Straight Flush with the highest cards: 10-J-Q-K-A of the same suit.
Some games, mostly those that use less than five cards can use alternative poker hands ranking. For example, in a three card game, three card flush and three card straight can be legal hands. In such case hands ranking would be as follows: High Card, Pair, Three Card Straight, Three Card Flush, Three of a Kind.
